Megaplier — How It Works Now

Since April 2025, the Megaplier is baked into every ticket. No extra cost — every $5 ticket includes it. The old 10x multiplier is gone. Here's the new distribution:

MultiplierOdds of Being DrawnBall Distribution
5x1 in 163 balls out of 32
4x1 in 84 balls out of 32
3x1 in 4.67 balls out of 32
2x1 in 1.818 balls out of 32

The Megaplier uses a weighted 32-ball drum. Since April 2025, the old 10x multiplier has been retired. Max is now 5x.

Mega Millions FAQ

When are Mega Millions drawings?

Tuesday and Friday at 11:00 PM ET. Ticket sales close around 10:45 PM ET (exact cutoff varies by state).

Can I buy Mega Millions tickets online?

Yes. Courier services like Jackpot.com and theLotter buy official physical tickets for you. Pick your numbers online, they purchase at a licensed retailer, scan the ticket to your account. If you win, it's your ticket. See our courier comparison.

Why did Mega Millions go to $5?

The April 2025 overhaul raised the price from $2 to $5 but included the Megaplier automatically (was previously $1 extra). The Mega Ball pool shrank from 25 to 24, improving jackpot odds by about 3.9%. Starting jackpots jumped from $20M to $50M. Whether it's "worth it" depends on your budget — you're paying more per ticket but getting a multiplier and better starting pots.

What happened to Just the Jackpot?

Gone. It was a $3 option that let you only play for the jackpot (no other prizes). It was retired with the April 2025 overhaul. There's no replacement.

Mega Millions or Powerball — which is better?

Mega Millions has slightly better jackpot odds (1 in 290M vs 1 in 292M) and bigger starting jackpots ($50M vs $20M). But Powerball costs $2 vs $5, draws three times a week vs twice, and offers a 10x multiplier (Mega Millions maxes at 5x). If you're budget-conscious, Powerball lets you play more tickets. If you want the included multiplier, Mega Millions.

Which states sell Mega Millions?

47 states + DC + US Virgin Islands. Only Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah don't have a lottery. Mississippi sells Powerball but not Mega Millions.

How long do I have to claim a prize?

Same as Powerball — depends on the state. Ranges from 90 days to 1 year after the drawing. Most states give you 180 days to 1 year. Check your state lottery website for the exact deadline.
